La Playa: Insurance with Intelligence®

Orchestras Insurance

What if...

  • Your leader's instrument is damaged in transit?
  • An audience member is injured at your performance?
  • Borrowed costumes, props or equipment get damaged?
  • One of your performers is injured on stage?
  • Airport delays mean you miss a performance?

In the performing arts, the show must always go on – but for orchestras, good insurance isn’t just about processing a claim, it’s about thinking laterally to solve challenges and problems fast. By supporting you with specialist cover and sound risk management advice La Playa can help you do a great job.

Orchestras and ensembles present very specific risk exposures – and now your digital and online risks can expose you globally. At La Playa, we’re passionate about the arts and creative industries – many of us are practitioners and active consumers; in fact, La Playa founded the first ever corporate art collective.

So why do orchestras need specialist insurance?

1. Cover: orchestras need a diverse range of cover, including “non-standard” property insurance (computers, sheet music, audio visual equipment, props, stock and musical instruments); Business Interruption (to protect income streams during physical and technological disruptions such as fire, flood, power & telecommunications failure, prevention of access to a venue, failure of a safety curtain, sound & lighting); liabilities for audiences, freelancers, volunteers, merchandise and venues; money (box office income, per diems, programme/merchandise cash); and all the protection needed for touring activities. They may also need to consider Cancellation Insurance (especially if they promote their own concerts); Trustee Liability protection for their board; and Professional Liabilities to defend against allegations of libel, slander, infringement of copyright, breach of confidentiality – particularly as their websites expose them to global legislation of which they can have limited knowledge.

2. Definitions/MO: as well as the range of cover needed by an orchestra, there are also key differences in the “definitions” in the contracts: for example, “employees” needs to include volunteers, freelancers, tour managers; and a policy that defines “working hours” as 9-5pm isn’t going to work.

At La Playa, we understand you so well, we'll compete the form for you... Let's talk! Our premiums start at £600 inclusive of IPT.

We can help with:

  • Property: computers, sheet music, audio visual equipment, offices, props, stock and musical instruments
  • Business Interruption: protects income streams during physical and technological disruptions (fire, flood, power & telecommunications failure, prevention of access to venue, failure of safety curtain and lighting)
  • Public, Product & Employers' Liabilities: compensation payments arising from damage to third party property, or personal injury (audiences and venues)
  • Money: box office income, per diems, merchandise/programme cash
  • Travel & Touring: trip cancellation, medical expenses, passport replacement, loss of baggage
  • Cancellation: Cover against performer non appearance, venue closure and other production threatening events
  • Professional Indemnity: protects against allegations of negligent advice from your website, and in a consultancy capacity, breach of duty or mismanagement
  • Trustee Liability: protection for your board, who are personally liable for the organisation's decisions
  • Legal Expenses: protects your organisation in employment disputes, health & safety issues, contract disputes and tax issues, and provides an advisory service
  • Key person insurance - protecting your organisation's future
  • Employee Benefits - pensions and benefits to help you attract & retain top talent
